‘iPhone 13 comes too early for Touch ID in screen’

The first models of the iPhone 13 had Touch ID in the screen, but in the end Apple has removed the ‘under the skin’ fingerprint scanner.

‘iPhone 13 has no Touch ID in screen’

So says Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman in its weekly newsletter. Gurman is a well-known Apple journalist and often one of the first to know about new developments.

According to Gurman, the iPhone 13 will not get Touch ID. That’s a shame, because many Apple fans have been hoping for a fingerprint scanner under the screen for years. The journalist writes that Apple has seriously investigated the possibility.

The first prototypes of the iPhone 13 also had Touch ID in the screen, claims Gurman. The company would have copied the technology that competitor Samsung uses in the foldable Galaxy Fold 3 smartphone, for example.

It’s not clear why Apple eventually dropped the feature. Probably the fingerprint scanner did not work as hoped.

How to unlock your iPhone in the future

Furthermore, the Bloomberg reporter also dives into the future of Face ID (face unlock) and Touch ID in his newsletter. According to Gurman, Apple is currently considering two possible directions:

  • Top models have processed Face ID in the screen, while entry-level iPhones still have a notch (screen notch) for this.
  • The most expensive iPhones have Face ID incorporated into the screen, but cheaper models have Touch ID below the display.

Gurman therefore claims that Apple’s future lies with Face ID anyway, but that Touch ID may continue to play a significant role in the cheaper segment.

iPhone 13 event next month

The rumor mill surrounding the iPhone 13 is working overtime. We expect the 2021 iPhone to be announced next month. The iPhone 13 seems to get a faster processor, new color options and better hardware.

The top models, the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max, would also take major steps in the field of screen and photography.
