You do this when you have found an AirTag

After years of rumors, Apple finally unveiled the AirTag in April. You attach this handy tracker to, for example, your backpack, keys or wallet. You can then easily set up the AirTag via Bluetooth and link it to your Apple ID. Have you lost something? Via the Find My app you can quickly see where your belongings are.

But what if you find a backpack that is not yours, but that has an AirTag attached to it? Or if you come across a separate tracker? Apple naturally values privacy. However, once you’ve found an AirTag, you can check whether the owner has reported it as lost. In that case, contact information may also be available.

This is how you proceed:

  1. Tap the white side of the AirTag against the top of your iPhone or another smartphone with NFC chip;
  2. Tap the notification that appears on your screen.

    A website will open where you will find more information about the AirTag, including the serial number.

  3. If the owner has reported the AirTag as lost, you may see a message with contact information.

    You can contact us to let us know that you have found the AirTag.

Did the owner not provide contact information? Then you can follow the on-screen instructions to turn off the AirTag.
