iPadOS 16 support: which iPads can update?

The iPad will receive a spectacular update this year with iPadOS 16, with major innovations. At least: if we are to believe the rumours. But which iPads will get iPadOS 16 support?

Read on after the ad.

Which iPads can you update to iPadOS 16?

Since 2019, Apple no longer calls the operating system for the iPad iOS. The software is still very similar to that of the iPhone, but also has many extra functions – especially in the field of multitasking. That’s why the time was right for a name of its own: iPadOS.

In June, Apple will present the latest version of it: iPadOS 16. This will take place during WWDC on June 6. Only then will we know what the major innovations are that Apple will bring to the iPad in 2022. Apple will also let you know which iPads support the latest software.

With a new operating system, support for some older iPads often expires. Last year was an exception. All iPads that could handle iPadOS 14 could also update to iPadOS 15.

This year, however, the curtain seems to be falling for some iPads. Especially because the first generation iPhone SE and iPhone 6s are rumored to be unable to update to iOS 16. These iPhones have an A9 processor. The iPad mini 4, iPad Air 2, iPad 5 and iPad Pro 1 (from 2015) have a chip that is just as old or older. Chances are, these iPads won’t be able to update to iPadOS 16.

iPadOS 16 support

These are the iPads that we expect to receive iPadOS 16 support:

  • iPad Pro (2nd generation or later)
  • iPad Air (3rd generation or later)
  • iPad mini (5th generation or later)
  • iPad (6th generation or later)

By the way, you can still use your iPad after iPadOS 16. You will still receive security updates. Your iPad just won’t get any new features. You will also notice over time that some apps are no longer suitable for your device.

New functions

iPadOS 16 will be an interesting update. The operating system will probably get a new multitasking interface. What exactly will change is not yet known, but perhaps there will finally be a possibility to work with different windows, as we are used to on the Mac or PC.

Apple would also have plans for a new appearance for notifications. Apple has also changed the notifications often in the past few years, for example with the stacked push notifications and the notification overview. However, Apple would not be satisfied yet and would make changes again.
