iOS 15.4 makes Face ID with a mouth cap possible, even without Apple Watch

Apple has released the first beta version of iOS 15.4. The most striking and long-awaited new feature: using Face ID with a mouth cap.

Read on after the ad.

Using Face ID with a face mask is possible in iOS 15.4

Apple has released the first beta version of iOS 15.4. The software contains a number of new features. One new feature quickly stood out: iOS 15.4 finally makes it possible to use Face ID when wearing a face mask. To make this possible, Face ID will soon recognize the unique facial features of the area around your eyes.

Face masks are an indispensable part of the current street scene. That is extra annoying for many iPhone users, since the current Face ID does not work with a mouth cap – unless you also have an Apple Watch. Fortunately, this will soon change. In iOS 15.4 you no longer need an Apple Watch to use Face ID in combination with a mouth cap. However, Apple indicates that Face ID is still safest if you use it without a mask on.

Whether the new feature works well remains to be seen. However, we assume it is – Apple has not waited two years with masks support for Face ID for nothing. The question is how long we will still be wearing face masks, but with iOS 15.4 you never have to enter your code again when you’re on the train.

More about iOS 15.4

The first beta version of iOS 15.4 has just been released. But unlike iOS 15.3 (which might as well have been called iOS 15.2.2), iOS 15.4 already shows a lot of small and big improvements. Universal Control is finally celebrating its introduction, you can start SharePlay via the Share button and you can save your CoronaCheck QR code in Wallet (probably only the international version). In addition, Apple usually closes vulnerabilities in new iOS versions.

It is not yet known when iOS 15.4 will be available to all users. Knowing Apple, there will first be four to five beta versions before the company officially rolls out the update to everyone. We keep up with you iPhoned of course fully informed!
