The iOS 16.2 update has only just been released, but Apple is not sitting still. iOS 16.3 beta 1 has also been released, with a cool new feature!
Read on after the ad.
iOS 16.3 beta 1: Here’s what’s new…
Beta 1 of iOS 16.3 contains a major change: Apple adds support for physical security keys and ‘FIDO’. FIDO (Fast Identity Online) is a standard devised by major tech companies (such as Apple, Google and Microsoft) to make logging in safer and easier.
Of FIDO and physical security keys protect your accounts against phishing and malicious parties. Sometimes it is even possible to log in to websites or apps without a username and password. FIDO and these keys are not a new invention, because it has been around for some time. For more information, please watch the video below.
… and this makes it important
But what good is the support for physical security keys and FIDO on your iPhone, iPad or Mac? You may already have to log in for work with a special security key on your work computer. This is often a USB stick or an NFC tag. Apple will soon also give you the option to log in for your Apple ID. At the moment, this is done with codes that are sent to your other Apple devices.
It can also be used with two-step verification and two-factor authentication. For this you often need a second app, such as those from Microsoft or Google. You then have to retype a code or accept it in the app to log in.
Soon you will do that with your Face ID or Touch ID. Whether Apple will also support this form remains to be seen, but there have been rumors that logging into websites and apps will soon be even easier with your iPhone.
When will iOS 16.3 be released?
Before the official release, there are always several beta versions for developers. They can then start testing the new functions and build them into their apps. Over time, the final release will become available to everyone.
Apple has already indicated that the new security feature of iOS 16.3 will not be available until 2023. This will probably not be in January right away, but you will have to wait until February or March.
