Instagram copies again: app steals BeReal function

The Instagram Stories were a copy of Snapchat, the Instagram Reels were copied from TikTok and the next one to be put under the copier appears to be the app BeReal.

Instagram copies BeReal

BeReal is a new social media app that is getting more and more popular. The app wants to get rid of the fake, posed photos by raiding you at any time for a photo opportunity. You make that with both the front and rear camera and you get two minutes. Your followers get a glimpse into your ‘real’ life.

Instagram seems to copy this feature blindly, developer Alessandro Paluzzi discovered in a beta. The feature is called IG Candid. “Add the IG Candid to your Story and get notified at a different time each day to capture and share a photo in 2 minutes,” Instagram describes the feature.

Paluzzi also shows the interface when taking an IG Candid photo in one of his tweets. This also looks familiar: you take a photo with both the selfie and the rear camera at the same time. Users have two minutes to take a photo. Photos shared through the IG Candid will appear in the Stories section.

An Instagram spokesperson confirms to Engadget that the feature is being tested internally, but does not provide further details. It is therefore not yet certain that the function will actually appear, although it appears to be so.

Incidentally, Instagram has already carefully started to copy BeReal. The app has added a new ‘Double’ feature to its in-app camera, which mimics BeReal’s popular shooting style. This allows you to take a picture of yourself at the same time as with the rear camera. Your selfie will appear as a small thumbnail in the top corner.
