‘In the summer our garden looks like a pigsty’

“I’m crushing a dozen mosquitoes while yelling at my kids for the fortieth time not to splash me. Then they get out of the pool, scream for towels and run through our yard in their underwear.’ In other words: Elizabeth describes an average summer day in her backyard.

“But that’s not all,” she continues. ‘Next to the pool we have a trampoline, swing and climbing wall. Although the children usually choose to have their own fun. The result is that the garden will be demolished.’

There is not a blade of grass left, Elizabeth outlines the situation. ‘In addition, we also have three dogs. One of them, a German Shepherd, wants to be everywhere the kids are. He thinks he must protect them from all dangers. Small detail: dogs get hot when temperatures rise and then dig big holes.’

Her children call them craters in a lunar landscape. ‘And then they think they can turn it into a lake. Go, turn on the garden hose and then they stand in it themselves – fully clothed – turning everything into one mud pit.’

Add to that all the toy tools, dinos and pool toys and you understand that her garden doesn’t look like much. “You can safely say it’s a wreck. But you know, at least the kids aren’t sitting on a screen and having a great time. They’re happy, we’re happy.’
