‘I avoid places where people are dressed up’

After a not so pleasant experience, Lisanne prefers to avoid all places where people are dressed up. For her, she prefers no parades, carnival or the circus.

“Carnival, the circus, even Sinterklaas parades: nothing for me because of all the people dressed up. I suffer from coulrophobia, which is officially “an aversion to clowns.” But in extreme cases, like me, it goes further.

Dressed up people

I have it left over from a Queen’s Day from my youth. There I stood with my parents watching the floats. A group of boys had dressed up in gorilla suits. Roaring like monkeys they approached the audience and they thought it was fun to startle me.

Since then I prefer to avoid places where people are dressed up. Yet I try to turn off that fear for my son, so that he does not take over.”
