Tantrum

It was another such day. The kind of day that Lianne didn’t feel like doing anything, said ‘no’ to everything and ended up in a tantrum at the slightest tantrum. Normally I could have the patience for these toddler troubles, but that day we celebrated our youngest daughter’s first birthday and we still had to get bags full of groceries at home. Because Daphne was paged from work in the morning, I went with Fee in the sling and Lianne in the buggy to the supermarket. But we hadn’t left the street when Lianne screamed that she wanted to walk.

I had resolved to bend as much as possible with Lianne that morning. Maybe not the best parenting technique, but at least the chance of a hysterical mood was the smallest. So no sooner said than done: get your child out of the car and go.

Patience

Every now and then, Lianne stopped to look at the teeming ants, count blades of grass, or pick up branches. Nice for about three times, but when I noticed it took us fifteen minutes to get out of the street (and gave them a big mouth every time I told her to come along), my patience ran out: I pulled Lianne up by her arm and called for her to listen.

Wrong stuff

A deafening roar followed. Lianne grabbed her arm and didn’t want to move it anymore. Then I knew: this is bad. I immediately walked back home.

Guilty

Thank goodness Daphne had just come home and I was able to go to the ER with Lianne. With shame on my cheeks I told what had happened. Then my suspicion was confirmed: Lianne had a Sunday arm. The doctor reassured Lianne, made a few strange movements with her arm, and miraculously the elbow snapped back into place. The pain was almost instantly gone, and Lianne smiled as if nothing had happened. Still, we moved Fee’s birthday one more day to recover. And I? I’ve felt guilty for weeks.
