Jaimie Vaes about mother mafia: ‘Why so critical?’

In her very first column for Thank you Jaimie Vaes speaks out about the mother mafia that she got after she spoke out about the autism of her son Lío (3).

She writes: ‘I recently spoke out about the possible form of autism that our son has, which according to some mothers should not have been allowed. I did that very deliberately; many hours of research went into discovering that Lío is ‘special.’

Taboo

She continues: ‘Unfortunately there is still a taboo on talking about autism. …””…The last thing I want as a mother is to look away out of shame, so I immediately decided to open up.” Because Lío can’t speak for herself yet, she thinks it’s important that she takes on that role as a parent. “To explain why he is the way he is.”

The reviews that followed were not kind. Something Jamie doesn’t understand. “This is not about young girls who just shout, but about grown women who pass judgment in a short-sighted and often stupid way.” Women who are mothers themselves.

“This is not about young girls who just shout something, but about adult women who pass judgment in a short-sighted and often stupid way”

Yet Jaimie also received support. ‘I have only received positive messages from fathers and mothers who have a child with autism. They did understand me, and I could also find a lot of support with them.’

Jaimie wonders, “Why are we women so critical of each other?” You don’t always have to agree – I can have my opinion – but the last thing I want is to put a fellow mother down.’
