In our section ‘The forgotten smartphone’ and ‘The forgotten telephone’ the most diverse devices are presented. For example, last week we took the Nokia 8210 out of the closet, from the year 1999. This week it is time for a smartphone from Huawei. In 2012, the Huawei Ascend D Quad appeared. Ascend was the model name it has applied for years. With the Huawei P8 series, this name was renounced. The Huawei Ascend D Quad probably doesn’t tell you much anymore. Interestingly, this device was one of the first devices with a quad-core processor.

In 2012, Huawei announced the Ascend D Quad at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. During this fair we also saw two other devices that appeared with a quad-core processor. These were the LG Optimus 4X HD and the HTC One X. Besides the D Quad came the Ascend D Quad XL. The difference was the battery capacity and the dimensions of the device. The phone was equipped with the Huawei K3V2 quad-core processor, which came from the Chinese manufacturer’s own factory. In the other two models, it was an NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor.

On board the Huawei Ascend D Quad we saw a 4.5 inch IPS-LCD display from Toshiba. This delivered an HD resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. Furthermore, the smartphone from Huawei was equipped with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage space. There was room for a memory card to expand the memory. You could start taking pictures with the 8 megapixel camera, which could also film in Full HD. On the front was a 1.3 megapixel camera.

The Huawei Ascend D Quad was also equipped with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Huawei had made several adjustments to this, but they were much less extreme than how we know it from the EMUI skin. It gave the Nexus experience with the device. If we look at the further specs of the smartphone, we arrive at WiFi and Bluetooth 3.0. With the Ascend D Quad we saw an 1800 mAh battery. The battery capacity of the Ascend D Quad XL was 2600 mAh.

The Huawei Ascend D Quad summarized in 3 points:

  • No EMUI skin, but a layer close to Stock Android
  • 4.5 inch IPS LCD screen
  • Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
