Honda abandons Clarity plug-in hybrids and hydrogen
While Honda discontinued the Clarity EV in 2020, the automaker has decided to discontinue production of its hydrogen fuel cell and plug-in hybrid Clarity models this summer, reports Autoblog. This decision is believed to be due to the low demand for vehicles.
Honda wants to realize other projects in the years to come
Indeed, the fuel cell vehicle Clarity did not take off in the United States due to its high price tag of $ 71,200 and the lack of hydrogen fueling infrastructure in the country. With the end of the Clarity EV, PHEV and fuel cell models, Honda no longer builds any electrified models in the United States.
Nonetheless, the automaker has said it will build enough Clarity fuel cell models for its customers by 2022. As a reminder, Honda’s new goal is to launch an electric car by 2024 and only sell vehicles. zero-emission electricity by 2040.
Regardless, Honda has no plans to give up hydrogen yet and has even struck a deal with General Motors to develop fuel cell vehicles. For information, most of the hydrogen in the United States is produced by reforming natural gas. Thus, fuel always releases greenhouse gases even if only water comes out of the exhaust pipe of a fuel cell vehicle.
