‘His clothes were too small, but maybe even worse: dirty. Pure neglect’

These mothers know that there are quite different opinions about clothing.

Miranda (35), mother of Jasmijn (6), Floor (4) and Sebastiaan (2).

“The playmate from group three visited us a lot. I knew that things were not going well at home, the whole school was talking about it. His clothes were too small and often torn, but perhaps worse: dirty. So dirty it smelled and I showered him first when he stayed with us. There was no poverty, in fact, his parents were quite well off. It was sheer neglect.

After watching it with regret for a school year, I gave him a bag of my son’s clothes after the umpteenth sleepover without pajamas or clean clothes. Got too small, I lied. Nice to see: he still wears them often. Unwashed.”

Good luck

Lotte (31), mother of Myrthe (3) and Lara (1).

“My mother-in-law is quite a commentator. On everything. That she has a grandmother’s day once every two weeks is very sweet, but after the umpteenth complaint about my daughters’ clothes being too cold, too warm, too clumsy or too ugly, I delivered them on the next grandmother’s day in their rompers, with their coats over it. I also included a rolling case. Contents: four outfits per child. Good luck, I thought gloating. That night she delivered them again without flinching – and in full regalia, I’ll give her that. But she never commented again.”
