High durability, interesting design and bold price
Motorola has officially introduced the new rugged Motorola Defy smartphone. There are not many models with higher durability on the market, at least not from established manufacturers. We can mention, for example, the Xcover series from Samsung or CAT smartphones. It is to these devices that the novelty will compete. The manufacturer informed about the smartphone through a press release.
The new rugged smartphone from Motorola was manufactured in collaboration with Bullitt, which is no newcomer to rugged models. He has more than 10 years of experience and works with companies such as CAT and Land Rover.
- Interesting fact: In the last 3 years, up to 34% of users have broken down their smartphone so that they needed to be repaired, or it no longer worked at all.
Servicing smartphones is not a cheap affair, we probably don’t have to mention that. We expect the replacement of the display in hundreds of euros and it is similar with other components. Owning a rugged device can significantly reduce these costs.
Motorola defy can also handle demanding handling
At first glance, it is clear that the main focus of this device is durability. This is evidenced, for example, by the thicker frames around the display. It got a diagonal of 6.51 ″, HD + resolution and an aspect ratio of 20: 9. It is protected by 0.7 mm thick Corning Gorilla Glass Victus.
The design attracts with its more angular shapes, rubberized back and especially the sharp lower right corner, which makes the novelty very atypical. We haven’t seen such design experimentation in a long time, and we’re glad that Motorola has embarked on it. You just can’t swap the defy model with another smartphone.
Performance will be provided by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 processor, which is supplemented by 4 GB of operational memory. The storage has a capacity of 64 GB and is expandable with microSD memory cards. The battery with a capacity of 5000 mAh will ensure two days of endurance. In the case of Motorola, we are already used to excellent endurance, this model will certainly not be an exception.
Fast TurboPower charging with a power of 20 W is also suitable, but we do not expect extra fast charging, as the battery is quite large. The USB-C charging connector is waterproof, as is the rest of the phone. Specifically, to a depth of 1.5 meters for 35 minutes. It can easily handle dust, sand and other impurities.
The device has been tested and should easily handle falls from a height of up to 1.8 meters. So if your phones crash frequently, this could be an interesting choice. Also interesting is the hole for the loop, which we haven’t encountered with smartphones for a long time. Definitely suitable for an outdoor smartphone.
It can handle vibrations, higher humidity, high and low temperatures and washing is also possible with soap. The device even survives in salt water, which is not normally recommended with IP68 water resistance. The smartphone comes with the older Android 10 operating system, with the latest security updates installed. The manufacturer promises two years of major system updates and three years of security updates.

Motorola defy: Competition
As we mentioned above, the novelty will compete with established manufacturers of rugged smartphones. CAT S42, for example, is in a similar price category. It offers a 5.5 HD display with HD resolution, 32 GB storage and memory card support. The battery has a capacity of 4200 mAh.
The Samsung Galaxy Xcover 5 is also a competitor. It has a slightly smaller TFT display with HD resolution and the camera has a resolution of only 16 MP. The performance is taken care of by the Exynos 850 processor, we find 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage. Motorola is again benefiting from a stronger battery.
