Half of all macOS viruses come from one place

The Elastic Security Labs website made some remarkable discoveries in a report on malicious software. The report mainly focuses on malware and malicious software that you mainly see on Windows PCs and Linux machines.

They found that 54.4 percent of all malware was found on Windows machines. About 39.4 percent came from Linux. Yet they also investigated malware on macOS and only 6.2 percent could be traced back to Apple’s operating system.

It was striking that almost 50 percent of all malware came from one place. The program Mackeeper was here with the perpetrator. In second place (with only 16.67 percent) we find xcsset.

Mackeeper is a program to remove viruses, advertisements and unnecessary files. That 50 percent of all viruses on macOS seem to come from here is understandable, according to Elastic Security.

Programs like Mackeeper can access important files. Often malicious people can use these types of programs to gain access to important system files.
