She was secretly quite jealous when her colleague went on holiday alone. That could be better, Regina thought and booked a solo ticket to the Ardennes.

Regina (35): “The colleague with whom I share an office at work went to Portugal for a week to relax and meditate in an old monastery.

A day after arrival, she took the first plane back to the Netherlands. She missed her family terribly. I actually thought it was pretty lame of her. When she told me about her travel plan, I had been a little jealous. Portugal. mountain top. Monastery. I wanted that too. And then she dropped it after a day!

Six months later I was on the train towards the Ardennes on Friday afternoon. End goal: a nice house somewhere on the edge of the forest. The ideal writing place. I could finally start that book that I had been carrying around for years. Six uninterrupted days of writing, how great was that? I arrived late, was tired and went to sleep quickly.

“Had I been so looking forward to this?”

In the morning it was quiet, so quiet! The edge of the woods was, well, the edge of the woods. But there was nothing on the other side. Well, fields and meadows. I didn’t really get into a writing mood. I wasn’t really in the mood for anything. Was this it? Had I been looking forward to this?

Better luck next time

My mood didn’t get any better, rather worse. Saturday dragged on. The Sunday too. I didn’t want to spend another night here. Sunday afternoon I called a taxi, which dropped me at the station twenty minutes later. I was so happy to be able to go home again.

Still, I’m going to try it again. That mountain top in Portugal is more for me. Sun and a little more people around me. That’s better.”
