Google Wallet adds funny holiday animation to the payment screen

Google Wallet is a lot more fun this week, as Google added a cute holiday animation to the payment screen. This way you get even more in the mood for the cozy holidays that are just around the corner.

Google Wallet pops up when you hold your phone on an NFC reader and you immediately see which payment card is being used with an animation above it. Normally this is a blue progress indicator that changes to a check mark after successful payment, after which the Google Pay logo appears. Nice, but not nearly as nice as the animation that is now available for the holidays. When you pay for your Christmas present or that bottle of champagne, you will probably see the holiday animation.

Animations to be precise, because there is a whole range of merry holiday animations that pass by one by one (by payment). One is a cat wearing all kinds of ugly Christmas sweaters and rolling off your screen as the G Pay icon appears. Another (seen at the top of this article) is a bunch of marshmallows drinking a cup of hot cocoa as they also float in a cup of chocolate milk. Marshmallowception.

Holidays

Whether they have already been rolled out in the Netherlands is not yet clear to the writer of this piece, but if they are, it will probably be noticed. Not only because of the animation itself, but also because their duration is longer than you are used to: they take up to three seconds (not that you have to watch them per se, you can turn your phone screen back to black as soon as the payment goes through is).

According to 9to5Google, it has often happened that other animations can be seen within the Wallet: in 2017 we saw within Android Pay that the green Android robot changed into various superheroes of the Justice League. If you had all five, you even got a special figure to celebrate collecting them all. That doesn’t seem to apply to these holiday animations, but we still hope to see them back in the Google Wallet app soon.
