‘Google TV gets Nest and Fitbit support’

Support for Nest devices is coming to Google TV. Good news for smart home fans. It’s still a rumor right now, but there’s a good chance it’s true. Google is in fact expanding a lot on its operating system for televisions. For example, Fitbit support would also be added in the future.

9to5Google writes that Google plans to bring Nest Audio support and integration with the Fitbit and Wear OS platform to Google TV. Google wants to invest heavily in Android TV and Google TV in the coming years, and that includes an expansion of the services. Especially now that it is the owner of Fitbit, it can conveniently integrate the wearables into the operating system for televisions.

Think, for example, of being able to follow a workout that is shown on your television, while next to it you can see how your heart rate and calorie burn are doing. That can work very well as motivation, in addition to the fact that information about your heart rate is useful in any case: because of this you know that you have to take it easy, for example, if you want to stay in the fat-burning zone.

Nest speakers

Before that, however, it’s up to Nest speakers to get integration with Google TV. The idea is that you can then use a Nest Audio as a wireless speaker. It is something that Google already advertised for the Chromecast with Google TV in 2020, but which is only now becoming reality. In the Netherlands we are lucky in that regard: the Chromecast with Google TV has also been available for two months.

When exactly the support will arrive is still unknown, but it should be sometime in the coming months. Moreover, the support is not only for Nest speakers, because you could also connect other speakers with it. The plans for Fitbit are much further in the future, because those tricks are not expected until 2023. 2024 will be Google’s smart home year, because then it seems to want to bring all its gadgets together to offer you a real smart home experience where the viewing experience is improved instead of deteriorated.

If you are eager for these functions, then it is not necessary to run to the store for a Chromecast with Google TV at the moment, but there is enough coming to the platform in the coming period. Google clearly has big plans and we are curious to see what it will achieve.
