Google Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5 get 5G support via June patch

A number of Androidworld readers have informed us that Google Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5 have received 5G support in the Netherlands through the June security update.

Google Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5 with 5G support

In May, the owners of the Google Pixel 4a 5G and the Google Pixel 5 got access to the 5G network on the Dutch mobile networks through the first beta version of Android 12. Google Netherlands announced at the time that Pixel phones with Android 11 would follow and now the time has come: “The June update does indeed add 5G support to the Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5 in the Netherlands”, a spokesperson for Google Netherlands told Androidworld.

To be able to use the 5G network in the Netherlands, Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G owners must download and install the latest security update. The June patch will come in by itself via an over-the-air (OTA) update. You can also install the update manually and you can read exactly how to do that here. The Factory Images can be found here and the OTA files can be found here. As soon as the security update is available, the 5G icon will automatically appear at the top of the screen.

5G in the Netherlands

The 5G network via the 700 MHz band was turned on in the Netherlands last year. KPN and T-Mobile were the first providers and Vodafone previously offered comparable speeds, but via the existing 4G network. We do not expect the biggest performance gain until 2021 or 2022, because then the 3.5 Ghz band will be auctioned and mobile internet can become two to three times as fast.
