From fitting without clothes and having sex without gravity

We hope you had a good day and now we want to give you some exciting information to take with you into the evening. t3n Daily is also available as a podcast and as a newsletter. Here are the topics of the day.

Zalando makes digital fittings possible

One of the problems when buying clothes online is: Will what I order there fit me? Zalando now wants to counteract this by launching its virtual dressing room. With the help of an avatar, prospective buyers can now “try on” different jeans as part of a pilot project. Pants are known to be difficult goods due to the different fits.

In order to create the 3D avatar, the tool needs the height, weight and gender of the potential buyers. A thermal image-style visualization then shows where the garment fits tight or loose on the created avatar. With the digital fitting, Zalando wants to reduce the number of returns. This is more sustainable – and saves a lot of money: Each return costs around 20 euros for handling, return postage and loss of value on average.

Sex in space: research is intensified

The fact that more and more space tourists could set off on excursions into space in the coming years also has an impact on research. Researchers at the British University of Cranfield are calling for research into the effects and possible risks of sex in space. So far, little is known about possible biological risks in the early stages of pregnancy in space, they say. This also applies to the effects of weightlessness and space radiation on a human germ.

According to the researchers, it is known that the special environment could have “significant consequences” for different areas of the reproductive process. It is possible that problems could arise after conception in space when the pregnant woman returns to earth. It is also not yet clear whether or how well contraceptive methods work in space.

iMessage support for Windows 11

Windows users can now also send iMessages from their PC and make calls directly from their Windows PC. Microsoft has released the Phone Link for iOS for all Windows 11 customers worldwide. Android users have been able to use the functions for some time.

However, there are still restrictions: A Bluetooth connection between the iPhone and the Windows PC is required. If you later receive a message and are not connected to the PC at the time, the message will not be visible. Also, you can’t participate in group chat conversations, and you can’t send or receive pictures or videos either. According to Microsoft, the iMessage function should only be available to Windows 11 users. The tool also does not work with iPads.

New real-time payroll system on the market

Payroll accounting in real time: That’s what the HR tech company Personio promises with a new payroll accounting system that combines payroll and HR processes and maps them holistically. The target group of “Personio Payroll”, as the system is called, are small and medium-sized companies.

“Instead of collecting changes such as new tax classes, bank details or information about new employees over a whole month and then forwarding them to an external system, data is validated immediately and changes are made,” explains Hanno Renner, co-founder and CEO of Personio. The potential of the system is great: “Our existing customers currently spend significantly less money per employee on Personio than on payroll accounting.” Personio Payroll is now available in Germany via the Early Access program. General availability is planned for 2023.

This is why ChatGPT lies more often in certain languages

Does ChatGPT lie more often in certain languages than others? This is the conclusion of the News Guard magazine. Chinese, in particular, seems particularly prone to misinformation. Blame it on the propaganda of the Chinese state. The magazine had given ChatGPT seven tasks to spread disinformation narratives about China. The English-language version refused six times because it was “neither appropriate nor ethical” for the AI language model to “create false or misleading news articles”.

In the variants in simplified and traditional Chinese, however, ChatGPT produced seven messages with incorrect information without contradiction. This is explained by the data corpus from which the AI distils its answer. The Chinese data core contains other information that ChatGPT is based on, it said.
