Filing a tax return: Tax return 2020 app now available

There is a good chance that the dreaded blue envelope has already slipped into your letterbox or the message in your Berichtenbox app: from 1 March you can file your income tax return 2020. The easiest way to do this is via the accompanying Tax Return 2020 app from the Tax Authorities, which you can now download from the Google Play Store.

Tax return 2020 Tax Administration app

As usual, you can file a tax return in two ways this year, via the My Tax Authorities website or via the Declaration 2020 app. This app was updated annually on 1 March, but a new version is already available in the Play Store.

Fortunately, a lot of data for private individuals has already been entered in advance to make the tax return easier, and that also applies to the new Tax return 2020 app. This not only speeds up the return process, it also reduces the risk of unintentional errors.

Do I have to file a report?

Have you received a declaration letter from the Tax Authorities stating that you must file an income tax return 2019? Then you must file a declaration. Didn’t you receive a letter? Then you may still have to file a declaration.

Can I use the 2020 declaration app?

According to the tax authorities, there is a good chance that you can use the 2020 tax return app. In some cases this is not possible. For example, did you not have the same tax partner throughout the year in 2019, bought or sold a house, had a residual debt for a former owner-occupied home or a loan for your owner-occupied home taken out with family or a foreign bank? Then you cannot use the app.

In the Play Store description you can see in which situations you cannot use the app. The alternative is to submit the declaration via My Tax Authorities. You cannot use the app if you:

– did not have the same tax partner throughout the year
– bought or sold your home and therefore had deductible expenses
– had a residual debt for a former owner-occupied home
– temporarily rented out your home, for example through Airbnb
– had an enterprise
– had a share in an undivided inheritance
– had income from other work
– lived abroad
– had income from abroad
– had assets abroad
– was a co-parent and your minor child was not registered at your address
– had deductible items, such as gifts, healthcare costs or study costs

How does the 2020 declaration app work?

Logging in to the app takes place via DigiD. After you have logged in, the app shows the data known to the tax authorities. You must check this information carefully. If they are then correct, you can make the declaration with the app. Is the data incorrect or is something missing? Then you can submit your tax return via the My Tax and Customs Administration website. You can change data via the website, but this is not possible in the app. Is the data correct? Then you can immediately sign and send your declaration.
