Expectant mother shares her annoyance: ‘Don’t interfere with baby name choice’

“Choosing a name for your baby should be something beautiful and fun,” says Diana. “But often there are people who ruin that process for you.”

Lots of annoyances

She is referring to the many comments that expectant parents receive from people close to them. “For example, that the name they have in mind sounds more like a name for a dog. Or a cat, goldfish, or hamster they once knew by that name.” But there are more arguments, Diana continues: “They think it’s a name that’s hard to pronounce, or old-fashioned. Or try to convince you to name your baby after a relative.’

‘Keep your opinion to yourself’

Diana knows that all these kinds of comments are usually well-intentioned. ‘But it’s no use to you. Parenting is hard enough – the last thing you want to do is worry that your loved ones won’t approve of your baby’s name.”

As for her, people should keep their thoughts on a possible baby name to themselves. “For example, say you can’t wait to meet the baby—or something positive. But keep your opinion of the name to yourself. And to all expectant parents I would like to say: trust yourself. In the end, you pick a name you’re happy with and once your baby arrives, it just suits him – no matter what others think.’
