‘Every other year I go on holiday on my own’

Finally time to devour that mountain of chicklits, go for a nice walk and especially lounging around on the beach. Every other year Isis goes on a solo trip, because that time alone makes her a nicer person.

Isis (40): “When I was in my early twenties I was going to go to Malaysia with a friend, but she met the love of her life and being on the other side of the world for a month suddenly seemed like a horror. The day she said she wouldn’t come, I demonstratively booked a ticket to Kuala Lumpur.

Solo trip

What a great month it was. And traveling alone was fantastic. Your senses are sharp, you make contact with your surroundings, you are not disturbed by conversations about home. You’re really there all the time.

I made two more solo trips. One by Spain and one by Greece. Shortly afterwards I met Sebastiaan and soon became pregnant.

Be right back

When the youngest was two and a half and I was a bit overflowing with all the hustle and bustle, I went away alone for a week. I liked it so much that I’m keeping it now. Every other year I want to walk around undisturbed in a place I’ve never been before. Although I sometimes don’t walk much and a lot of lounging around on a beach or on a terrace. Delicious. I devour chick lit, sleep in or take a nap in the middle of the day.

Of course I miss my family, but not to the point of crying. Sebastiaan can take good care of the children and my mother also assists; so I will leave with peace of mind.”
