iPad Pro 2022 can film ProRes video, but it is very cumbersome

One of the innovations that the iPad Pro 2022 offers is the recording of ProRes video. Unfortunately, that turns out to be quite cumbersome. You have to download a separate third-party app for it.

Read on after the ad.

Major handicap for ProRes video on iPad Pro 2022

Apple introduced ProRes video on the iPhone 13 Pro. This video codec is aimed at true professionals. It offers high color fidelity and uses much less compression than normal codecs. This allows you to better edit videos shot in ProRes.

The new iPad Pro 2022 can also handle ProRes video. In theory at least. Because it now appears that the standard camera app does not offer this option at all. It is currently unclear whether this is a bug or whether Apple is intentionally blocking ProRes from the app.

If you still want to shoot professional videos with your iPad, you have to rely on a third-party app. For example, if you download FiLMiC Pro from the App Store, you can get started with ProRes.

That is, of course, rather inconvenient. On the other hand, we wonder who exactly wants to film professional videos with their iPad. Certainly the 12.9-inch model is on the large side and is difficult to hold while walking down the street. iPhones are a much more convenient tool for the aspiring filmmaker.

Everything you need to know about the iPad Pro 2022

The iPad Pro 2022 is a fairly modest upgrade over its predecessor. The tablet reappears in two sizes: 11 and 12.9 inches. It runs on the M2 chip that we know from the MacBook Air 2022. This processor is lightning fast, but so was the M1.

The only other major innovation is the use of the Apple Pencil. The new iPad Pro detects the pen if you hover 12 millimeters above the screen. For example, you can adjust the thickness of the brush while drawing, while you can already see a small preview on the screen below the tip of your Apple Pencil. Apple calls this the ‘Apple Pencil hover experience’.
