Entry-level MacBook Pro with M2 coming this year (but won’t get ProMotion)

There will be an entry-level MacBook Pro with an M2 chip this year. Tells you what else this MacBook Pro has in store for you iPhoned you!

Read on after the ad.

Entry-level MacBook Pro with M2

In his most recent newsletter, Apple analyst Mark Gurman provides a few details about the new MacBook Pro with an M2 chip. Because this is an entry-level MacBook Pro with M2, a number of concessions are made.

For example, this Mac will not get a miniLED screen with ProMotion, but a standard LCD. Gurman also expects Apple to cut back on the amount of storage. In addition, it is expected that the Touch Bar will no longer return with this Mac.

The expectation is that not only this entry-level MacBook Pro will receive an M2 chip, but that there will also be a 24-inch iMac, an entry-level Mac Mini and a MacBook Air with M2 this year.

Release during Apple event (but which one?)

It is not yet certain when the entry-level MacBook Pro with M2 will appear. According to recent rumors, an event will be held in March in which, among other things, the new iPhone SE 2022 and a new iPad Air will be presented.

Apple events 2022

Bloomberg thinks Apple will unveil a new Mac at this event as well. It is not yet clear which one exactly. It could be the iMac Pro 2022, but also a faster Mac mini, a new MacBook Air or maybe the entry-level MacBook Pro with M2.

When the new MacBook Pro with M2 chip will be released, coffee grounds will remain to be seen. Apple usually unveils its new Macs in October, so we expect the launch could be around this time as well.

Here’s what you need to know about the M2 chip

The M2 chip is the successor to the super-fast M1 chip. Apple soldered all computer parts on this chip. For example, the graphics processor and Neural Engine are also fixed on the chip. This is also known as ‘System on a Chip’ or SoC. You will also find such a SoC in the iPhone 13 series, for example: the A15 processor.

This SoC has greatly improved the speed and graphics performance of, for example, Macs with an M1 chip compared to those with an Intel chip. So the chip makes the Macs a lot more powerful, so that heavy tasks and programs run much more smoothly.

iMac 2021

Apple announced the first M1 in November 2020. In 2021, the M1 family was expanded with the M1 Pro and M1 Max from the new MacBook Pro.

A new chip will be added soon. According to Gurman, the M2 chip is faster than the current M1 chip, but the speed gain is ‘marginal’. The more advanced chips ‘M2 Pro’ and ‘M2 Max’ are expected to follow in the first half of 2023
