Leaked memo: OnePlus becomes Oppo daughter

OnePlus and Oppo belong to the same parent company. Last week it was announced that the two manufacturers will collaborate even more intensively. Now there is another striking piece of news. In an internal memo, the collaboration goes much further and users are concerned about the survival of OxygenOS.

Internal memo about Oppo and OnePlus

OnePlus and Oppo will collaborate more intensively, according to a statement from Pete Lau, the CEO of OnePlus, last week. This will have a positive effect on the updates that are being rolled out, Lau said. In addition, it is possible to work more efficiently in more areas and to make use of each other’s knowledge. According to Lau, OnePlus would continue to operate independently. Now, however, there is another interesting piece of news. It is about an internal memo within OnePlus, which was brought out by leaker Evan Blass.

Lau confirmed in the earlier news that OxygenOS will remain the skin for OnePlus devices outside of China. HydrogenOS (a modified version of OxygenOS) was previously used in China, but the company has been working with ColorOS for some time. This is the skin that Oppo applies to its devices. Users have expressed concerns about the future of OxygenOS. Would OxygenOS eventually be replaced by ColorOS? That doesn’t seem to be the case, but nothing more has been said about it. The internal memo now states that staff are advised not to answer questions about the operating system or about ColorOS. Users are referred to the official channels in the advice.

Internal memo OnePlus Oppo

The memo further makes clear that the collaboration is going further than initially thought after hearing Lau’s earlier statement. Oppo will be above OnePlus. In fact, OnePlus thus becomes a subsidiary brand of Oppo. It is not clear what is the reason for this. Pete Lau is a product manager at Oppo and also the founder of OnePlus, and it will remain that way. It is clear from the memo that OnePlus will continue to operate as its own brand. Whether this will change in the future is unknown.
