End-to-end encryption is now also available for platoon backups

Facebook this week launched the introduction of a recently introduced feature that will allow users of the WhatsApp platform to encrypt platoon backups. Chat encryption has been available in the app for some time, but with that feature it will be possible to protect created backups. The Verge portal informed about the news.

According to the company, the update will gradually reach all users, but it will take a while. Encrypting your backup ensures that only you can access it. Even if you choose to save the backup to iCloud or Google Drive. Both Apple and Google were able to share unencrypted backups on demand with the government or law enforcement agencies.

However, backups encrypted with a 64-digit encryption key or password that gives you access to the key cannot be opened by anyone but you. The only downside is that if the password or key is lost, it will not be possible to restore access to the backup, even with the help of WhatsApp.

How to turn on backup encryption in WhatsApp

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Chats> Back up chats> Encrypted backup on end devices.
  3. Click Continue and follow the onscreen instructions to create a password or key.
  4. Then tap Done and wait for WhatsApp to prepare an encryption-protected backup on the end devices. You may need to connect the device to a charger.
