Electric scooters, is this allowed?

Electric scooters, you see them more and more often. Many people now wonder whether these e-steps are allowed on the road and what the rules are for this. In this article you can read the answers to these questions.

Rules for the e-step

The rules for an electric scooter, also known as an e-scooter, are quite complex. First of all, it is important to know that you are only allowed on the road with an e-step if the step has been approved. Are you going on the road on an unapproved scooter? Then you risk a fine. If you have an approved scooter, you can go on the road, but you also have to deal with a number of rules. Here are the main rules:

  • The scooter must be insured. If the scooter is this, you must put the insurance sticker on the scooter so that the police can check if asked.
  • The scooter falls under special mopeds, so it is the intention that you also drive in the place where mopeds are supposed to drive. This is usually on the bike path.
  • You must be at least 16 years old to be allowed on public roads with an e-step.
  • Are you going out with an e-step? Then it is forbidden to drive on the sidewalk at all times

In addition, you also have the rules regarding alcohol, drugs and your phone, what about an e-step? There is a clear answer to that: it is not allowed. The rules for an e-scooter are the same as for all other vehicles and there are therefore the same penalties. You may only use your phone when you are standing still. It is also allowed to listen to music or make calls hands-free. Do you take medication and do you want to know if you can operate an e-scooter? The same rules apply here as for all other vehicles.

What should the electric scooter all have?

An electric scooter stands on the street and waits for rent.

An e-step must also have a number of mandatory components. For example, an e-step always has good lighting, a handlebar and red and white reflectors. In addition, it is therefore also important that the scooter has a sticker from the insurance company and the vehicle identification number (VIN). The electric scooter really needs this equipment before you take it on the road. Should you encounter the police and fail to comply with this equipment, you may be fined or, in the worst case scenario, your e-scooter will be confiscated.

Population is increasing

The e-step is becoming increasingly popular. Stricter measures apply in the Netherlands than in all the countries around us. This is because the cycle paths here are busier and there is already a lot of different traffic on the way. Think of bicycles, mopeds, cargo bikes, cantas and e-bikes. If the e-step is also added, you increase the risk of accidents. Especially in the big cities it becomes less and less clear on the cycle path. Thanks to its popularity, you can see e-steps passing by more and more often, but there are a lot of rules in the Netherlands. It is not yet clear whether this will change in the future.
