This is how you install the beta of tvOS 15 (and this is what it’s good for)

tvOS 15 will be released this fall, but with the tvOS 15 beta you can already get started with the new software of the Apple TV. We explain how to install this.

Read on after the ad.

tvOS 15 beta: how to install the test version test

As always, Apple will first release a test version of its software before the general public can get started with it in the fall. In addition to iOS 15, iPadOS 15 and watchOS 8, you can now take advantage of the public beta of tvOS 15.

Although the update does not make any groundbreaking changes, it does introduce some nice improvements. Plus, signing up for the beta is a breeze. Just keep in mind that this is a test version that is less stable than a public version of tvOS. The chance of apps that don’t work, crashes and other crazy bugs is a lot higher.

Before you can go through the steps below, you’ll need to sign up your Apple ID for Apple’s beta program. You do this by going to beta.apple.com and signing up with your Apple ID. This is free and will bring the option to install the beta on your Apple TV. So use the Apple ID that you also use on your Apple TV.

This is how you install the public tvOS 15 beta

  1. Open the Settings app on your Apple TV;
  2. Go to System;
  3. Click on Software updates;
  4. Click on ‘Get beta updates’;
  5. Now click on ‘Update software’ and wait for the beta to install.

The beta may not appear immediately after completing the steps above. It may help to restart your Apple TV.

tvOS 15: this is all new

There are quite a few reasons to get started with tvOS 15 now. For example, the update adds the option to watch a movie or series with friends remotely with the new SharePlay feature. With the update you can also set a set of two HomePod Minis as a stereo system.

The Control Panel has also been updated to make it easier to operate. Finally, with AirPods Pro or AirPods Max with Spatial Audio, you can listen to content that supports this sound mode. Do you want to know more about Spatial Audio? Check out our Spatial Audio explanation.
