Edit Twitter post? It will finally be possible soon

Ever since the days when a tweet was 140 characters long, Twitter users have been pushing for an edit button. That is now finally in the works, as Twitter confirms that it is working on a way to edit a message.

On the 1st of April tweeted Twitter that it is developing an edit button. Good joke – everyone thought. But after Elon Musk bought 9.2 percent of Twitter shares and asked his 80 million followers if they wanted an edit button, things got a little more plausible.

Yesterday, Twitter allayed the last doubts. In a tweet (however different), Twitter announces that it has been working on an editing feature since last year. ‘No, we didn’t come up with that idea because of a poll,’ the company winks.

This finally makes it possible to fish that one typo or spelling error out of a tweet. Now you have to choose: either you immortalize your carelessness on Twitter, or you repost your corrected tweet and you lose your answers, likes and retweets.

The tweet editing option will soon be tested in Twitter Blue Labs, a place where subscribers will get early access to features the tech giant is experimenting with. The service is currently only available in a few English-speaking countries, including the US, Australia and Canada.

A short demo of the edit function can be seen in the tweet above. Tapping on the three dots next to your tweet will bring up the ‘Edit Tweet’ option. How Twitter’s edit button works is still unclear. So we don’t know how long tweets can be edited, and whether (just like with Facebook) you can see the editing history.

When the function is out, you will read about it on our website. Do you want to stay informed? Sign up for our newsletter:
