‘Due to the large school classes, there is less time for personal guidance’

Every child should be given the opportunity to develop through good and affordable education, says singer Nick Schilder. That is why he shines together with daughter Nikki in the campaign of online tutoring provider GoStudent.

Kek Mama talked to him about this.

What strikes you about education in the Netherlands?

“Children are often in large classes, which means there is less time for personal guidance. I used to be in the class with about 20 students, but with our children there are at least 30. Children who have a ‘backpack’; Dyslexia, ADHD and autism, for example, obviously require more attention from the teachers. As a result, children without a ‘backpack’ receive less attention.”

And how do you want to contribute to that?

“Among other things, by creating awareness for GoStudent, an online tutoring platform for affordable one-on-one tutoring. We have experienced GoStudent ourselves with our daughter Nikki and see that personal guidance works effectively and can also bring out the pleasure in learning.”

Which school subject did you need more help with?

“I was pretty good at learning, but for subjects like Economics and Mathematics, I paid the best in class out of my own pocket to tutor me prior to a test. Tutoring and I go way back So.”

In times of corona, the children were home schooled. How did that go for you?

“In the beginning, this was really switching gears. Because corona also temporarily put my singing career on a lower back, I had more time to help the children with this. Of course I really liked this one. In addition, Kirsten has been a teacher, so she knew better than anyone how to handle this properly. Thereby; because I knew that the situation would change again when the pandemic eased, I have been very aware of the quality time enjoyed it.”

Do you have more time for your family now that Nick and Simon are quitting?

“Actually, it has only gotten busier, haha. My head is overflowing with ideas that I want to work out. I am working on my solo career and at the same time there are TV recordings, shooting days, rehearsals, podcasts, collaborations ..”

And of course the GoStudent campaign, in which you shine together with daughter Nikki. What was it like doing that together?

“In the beginning it was exciting, but it was so much fun. I love seeing Nikki completely in her element and I’m incredibly proud of her and the result. The most important thing for me is that she does what she likes. When she came up with the idea that she would like to participate in this campaign, that’s why I thought; why not. This gives us a unique insight into our family.”
