“Is my iPhone slower after an iOS update?”

There used to be stories that Apple made old iPhones slower on purpose. Some users even took Apple to court in 2015 because they believed iOS 9 had been deliberately slowed down on their old iPhone. In reality this turned out not to be the case. The real reason? The deteriorated battery could not keep up with the performance.

Now with the release of iOS 16, the same question comes up again: is your (old) iPhone slower after the update to iOS 16?

Does iOS 16 Make Your Old iPhone Faster?

The German website Macwelt has conducted numerous tests over the past week. In the measurements, they tested an iPhone X, an iPhone 11 Pro and an iPhone 13 Mini. The mini contains a ‘new’ A15 chip, while the 11 Pro has an A13 chip. The iPhone X (with an outdated A11 chip) is the oldest device in the test that runs on iOS 16. This phone is therefore the phone for our comparison.

Without going very deeply into this test, we briefly explain how Macwelt performed this test. For example, the speed of Safari (and the loading of images) was first tested and they then looked at the benchmarkspeeds of the graphics cards and of the processors themselves.

The results: is iOS 16 slower than iOS 15?

To get straight to the point: iOS 16 does not slow down your iPhone. On the contrary, in many areas, the new software improves the performance of old iPhones. For example, Safari in iOS 16 (especially when loading images) works 20 percent faster than with iOS 15.6.1.

The result is not as clear with the CPU (processors) as with the Safari tests. The chip of the iPhone X benefits the most from the update. This phone gets even faster with iOS 16. Of the two other phones, the differences are negligible.

Graphically (such as when gaming on your iPhone) there is also little difference in the numbers. With the iPhone 11 Pro and the iPhone 13 Mini, the values remain the same or deteriorate slightly. It must be said that the iPhone X is clearly outdated. According to Macwelt, gaming on this phone was no fun. That does not necessarily mean that iOS 16 makes this iPhone slower.
