Apple postpones VR/AR glasses to 2023 due to multiple problems

We may have to wait quite a while before we can finally put on VR/AR glasses from Apple. Due to multiple issues during the development phase, the headset is unlikely to hit the market until 2023.

Read on after the ad.

Apple VR/AR glasses won’t be on the market until 2023

There have been rumors for years about Apple’s AR/VR glasses. This allows you to experience both virtual reality and augmented reality. According to Bloomberg the company had finally planned to showcase the headset at the WWDC 2022 developer conference in June. Meanwhile, Apple would consider delaying the launch for at least a few months. That would mean we won’t get a glimpse of the mixed reality goggles until the end of this year. Hopefully the device will be for sale in 2023.

Apple seems to run into several problems during the development of the headset. This would make the glasses too hot. In addition, there are complications with the cameras and the software.

The VR/AR glasses should be Apple’s first major new product since the 2015 Apple Watch. The company has big plans for the headset. According to Bloomberg, Apple sees these types of smart glasses eventually as a possible successor to the iPhone. It is therefore very important that the first model makes a good impression.

Later possibly also cheaper AR glasses

Apple’s VR/AR glasses don’t exactly come cheap. You will probably pay between 2000 and 3000 euros for it. The device contains a chip that is about as fast as the M1 Pro from the latest MacBook Pro. In addition, there are two 8K screens, which should ensure a razor-sharp image.

At the same time, Apple is working on cheaper AR glasses. With augmented reality you see a virtual layer over reality. This is useful, for example, when you are navigating and ‘projected’ arrows show you which way to go. So you can’t step into a completely digital world with those glasses, as is possible with virtual reality. We also expect AR glasses in 2023 at the earliest.
