do you use an antivirus app on your android phone?

Malware on phones and fraud via email and messaging apps is a growing problem. We wonder if you use the many antivirus apps available in the Play Store? Leave your vote in this AW Poll.

Antivirus Apps

Be it McAfee or Norton, all well-known internet security software companies also have an app. There is also a ‘Security’ app on every Xiaomi phone and last month it was also announced that Microsoft Defender, the well-known firewall for Windows PCs, is getting a mobile variant. The app only works for those who have a paid Office subscription.

But is it so important to have an antivirus app on your phone? Phone security solutions work differently from PCs in that they don’t really protect you from threats. They scan only the apps you install, provide security update reminders, and advise on the websites you visit with your browser. However, those functions can also be useful and on top of that, many apps also come with a password manager and a lot of interesting tips about security.

You could argue that you don’t really need extra security if you download your apps from the Play Store and are otherwise skeptical when surfing the internet. In addition, antivirus apps do not protect against fraud on WhatsApp or phishing. And let that just be two cyber threats that have been increasing in recent years. A final concern is that some antivirus apps run in the background and can slow down your phone and increase battery consumption.
