Daughter Bibi Breijman has 12(!) grandfathers and grandmothers (and that’s because of this)

According to Bibi it is very simple: her own parents separated when she was 2 years old. They both got a new partner, which puts the counter at four grandparents. And then you also have the parents of Teddy’s father Waylon, which makes for a total of six grandparents.

But what about the other six? Come on: Bibi’s own grandfathers and grandmothers are still alive and carry a special story with them. ‘My mother’s parents divorced more than ten years before I was born, at a time when this was not common. Nor the reason: my grandmother found out that she liked women. Much to my grandfather’s chagrin, but what can you do? He went to therapy and met his current wife there.’ She continues: ‘I have a strong bond with my grandmother. As a small child I called her ‘omo’, my child’s word for grandmother. I knew it from the Omo detergent commercial. My mother always laughed really hard because it sounded like ‘gay’ coming out of my mouth. This means that I grew up with one grandfather and three grandmothers on my mother’s side.’

The marriage of her Indian grandfather and grandmother also broke down. Her grandmother then found her childhood sweetheart again. ‘My grandfather and grandmother have always kept in touch with each other. So there is also a grandmother and two grandfathers there.(…) In retrospect, it is extra beneficial for our family, all those break-ups that ended in friendships. When Ted visits all those grandparents with her school report in a while, she can treat W and me to a rice table.’
