Data leak VodafoneZiggo, data of more than 700,000 customers on the street, what to do?

VodafoneZiggo has fallen victim to a major data breach. It concerns a leak that comes from software supplier Nebu, which has the market research agency Blauw as a customer. What to do now?

Data breach and collaboration with Blauw

Last Tuesday, the NOS, among others, came with the news that the Dutch Railways has been the victim of a data breach. This leak did not originate with the NS itself, but with a software supplier of market research agency Blauw from Rotterdam. The data breach allowed malicious parties to gain access to the software supplier’s network.

At the NS, unauthorized persons could therefore view data of participants in various customer satisfaction surveys. Data such as e-mail addresses and telephone numbers were thus exposed. This same type of data has come to light from VodafoneZiggo customers, the AD reports.

Multiple companies

No less than fourteen partner companies of Blauw have been affected. Including the NS and VodafoneZiggo. The latter has – as is also required – immediately reported this to the Dutch Data Protection Authority. They also indicate that they will conduct an investigation together with the software supplier and Blauw. Blauw himself says that an investigation is already underway to see which data was specifically leaked or was available to malicious parties. The company also reports that the necessary actions have been taken to close the leak.

As far as is known at this time, no passwords or financial data have been leaked. As mentioned earlier, this does concern telephone numbers and e-mail addresses. The parties therefore advise you to keep a close eye on your e-mail, text messages and other messages and to be alert for any phishing messages.
