Dashlane researched password quality worldwide

The password manager Dashlane shows where in the world the best and worst passwords are circulating. We are doing relatively well in Western Europe, while the United States has the worst score.

Quality passwords worldwide

A new study paints a picture of the quality of passwords worldwide. Password manager Dashlane has long had a scoring system that rates passwords and now shares average password scores in places around the world.

First of all: how does the score work? This is calculated based on the strength of your passwords, but Dashlane’s algorithms also examine whether the password is used for multiple accounts and whether it has been hacked before. There are public databases of leaked passwords that the password manager can view. A score is only really good from 90 points and for all scores that are lower, improvement is possible.

Eastern Europeans achieve the highest quota with an average of 76.4 points for their passwords. In Northern Europe they achieve an average of 74.3 and in Western Europe we are in third place with 73.4. The worst student in the world is the United States with a score of 69.1. In other American countries and in Asia, Africa and Oceania, Dashlane notes scores between 72 and 73 points.

Password generator and FIDO

But if we really look at the scores, it becomes clear that there is still a lot of room for improvement worldwide. Dashlane says it’s best for users to create passwords using a generator. It then creates a long code with numbers, letters and punctuation marks. You can easily manage such unique codes in a password manager, but most people have not yet taken that step.

While password managers are already quite easy to use, the tech industry is working hard towards a password-free future. The main tech companies have proposed the so-called FIDO standard that allows you to log in without passwords, using your phone as a kind of key. Google has already made the first preparations for FIDO in Chrome and Android.

Do you already use a password manager or are you mainly looking forward to a life without passwords? Let us know in the comments.
