Videoland V2, better late than never

Videoland’s app was a rotten thing. Regular crashes, illogical menu structures and always fiddling when you wanted to pause something. It was not the most user-friendly app, but Videoland wants to make up for that. It comes with Videoland V2. Is it really better? We discuss it in the App of the Week.

Video country V2

Videoland is the streaming service of RTL. You can therefore look far ahead programs such as Lego Masters, in addition to viewing special programming such as Temptation Island. However, there are also great series such as The Handmaid’s Tale and Love Life. It is one of the most Dutch streaming services, but that does not mean that it only contains Dutch content. And: it’s RTL’s streaming service, but it’s certainly not just RTL that counts.

A nice streaming service, but that has not always come out well in recent years. Although it is undoubtedly not easy to make an app from a streaming service, Videoland’s was very user-unfriendly. This is partly due to the red that is used very fanatically in the menu: because of this you often did not know where your ‘cursor’ was. The app also regularly crashed and it was always a bit cumbersome to pause or rewind something. In terms of design, the app was also a bit outdated by now.

Duplicate in the Play Store

So it’s time for a new app, and it’s been around for a while now. Both for mobile phones and televisions. It is a bit strange: you can still download the old app in the Play Store, in addition to the new Videoland V2. However, if you open the old app, you will see a screen that refers you to the V2 variant of the app, without you being able to continue to that first version. Note: you have to log in again if you want to use the new app, so make sure you have your password to hand. It’s a bit strange that there’s not just a big update instead of a new app, but maybe that’s also a little bit of marketing to say goodbye loud and clear to what was.

With the renewed app, Videoland promises a new design, less chance of interruptions, live viewing and more options for children. The new design in particular stands out: the images are a lot nicer, there are special round buttons with what will soon be shown at Videoland and everything is just a bit clearer, quieter and simply works a lot faster. Videoland V2 is rightfully V2: it really is a new version of an app that felt very dated. Videoland V2 can be measured much better with other streaming apps such as HBO Max and Netflix. It looks really good.

Streaming App

The reviews in the Play Store do not lie: casting does not work, black screen, subtitles cannot be found… To date, however, we have not encountered any serious malfunctions, we just see a cast button that works, subtitles that work and get we don’t have a black image. Some hiccups, for example, in the fight between Badr Hari and Alistair Overeem, which is quite an event on this Saturday night. It’s always milliseconds, but it’s annoying. Of course, the app will not always function like a charm. With this second version, Videoland probably did a smart job of tackling its launch in a big way, purely to make consumers aware of the new app. Although we would have liked a little less cumbersome in terms of downloading a new app.
