Cool app that converts photos into 3D

Epic Games has created an app that can convert photos into 3D models.

Epic Games, the name says it all, mainly makes games. But they are also active in other sectors. The company has now built a mobile app that can convert photos into 3D scans. Capture Reality, a company that Epic bought last year, made photogrammetric software called RealityCapture.

It can quickly convert laser scans or images into 3D scans of assets. With the RealityScan app, Epic hopes to give users access to the same technology on their phones. This is a logical step to bring the technology to a wider audience. Of course, this also allows them to earn (more) money.

The idea is that creatives can scan real-world objects at any time and use them in their projects. After logging in with your Epic Games account, the app will ask you to take a minimum of 20 photos of an item. You can also keep your finger on the record button while moving around the object. The entire object is ‘scanned’ in this way.

It is of course nice to scan your own sofa and add it to your home in The Sandbox. After the app has processed the images and turned them into a 3D object using RealityCapture’s servers, you can export the scan to Sketchfab. This company was also bought by Epic Games. Can’t be a coincidence, right?

You can then sell the item to other creatives or use it for your own projects. The app is currently being tested in a beta version for iOS. An Android version will follow at the end of this year.
