Unfortunately, Sony’s PlayStation 5 is currently not available on the open market – at least the console is still available as a premium in an electricity tariff. Here you will find all the important information about the price and availability of the PS5.
Order PS5: Here you can currently get the console
Please note that PS5 prices and availability may vary.
Sony only recently launched PlayStation Direct introduced a new way to order a PS5. The online shop, which was previously only available in the USA, is now also online in Germany. There you can register for the chance to order a PS5. Sony will then select a few lucky winners from among the registered entrants, who will be notified by email and given a time slot in which to purchase the PlayStation 5.
PlayStation 5 availability: The current situation
Although the PlayStation 5 went on sale in November 2020, it is still not available across the board. In the last few weeks there have been at least occasional “drops” where the console was available several times in limited contingents for a short time (usually just minutes) from various online retailers. If you want to increase your chances of catching the PS5 in retail sales, you should keep an eye on the following dealers and, if necessary, strike quickly.
Buy PS5: Overview of online shops
PlayStation 5 with disc drive for 499 euros
The disc version may cost 100 euros more, but is recommended for PlayStation fans who have a large library of PS4 games on discs and want to keep using them. You can also use the PS5 disc version to play Blu-Rays and 4K Blu-Rays.
PlayStation 5 All Digital Edition for 399 euros
With the PS5 All Digital Edition, you’re limited to games you buy from the PlayStation Store. If you don’t have a large game collection and don’t plan to build one up or play mainly free-2-play titles like Fortnite or CoD: Warzone, you can access it here. So you save 100 euros and get a slightly slimmer console.
PS5 on the gray market – on eBay
A big problem regarding the availability of the PS5 lies with the so-called scalpers. These are bots that continuously scan shop pages and purchase consoles as they become available. The bot operators want to continue buying consoles on trading platforms like eBay thanks to the artificial scarcity at a profit. Of course, while the method may seem morally questionable, buying the console at a premium on eBay is an option. However, we recommend that you study the offers carefully for the reputability of the dealer, origin of the hardware, guarantee/warranty and delivery date.
The eBay prices provide an indirect impression of the relationship between supply and demand. We monitor the eBay prices closely, several times a week we determine the best price from reputable eBay dealers for consoles with the condition “new” and the “Buy It Now” option that can be delivered from Germany. From this it can be deduced how far away the PlayStation 5 is from being widely available. Here the prices have recently picked up again. While the PS5 with disc drive was still traded at prices of 650 euros in August, the cheapest prices are currently well over 700 euros again. The PS5 without an optical drive costs around 670 euros again, while it was still available for 550 euros in late summer. This corresponds to a surcharge of 40 to 70 percent compared to the RRP – pure usury! Unfortunately, scalping seems to continue to pay off.
Buy PS5 via tariff bundle
Even though the PlayStation 5 is currently almost permanently sold out in retail, you can sometimes still get it together with a mobile phone, Internet or electricity tariff, because no scalpers access here. Unfortunately, there are currently no tariffs available.
