Community Notes: Twitter launches fact check feature

Twitter wants to involve its users in fact-checking via the feature formerly known as Birdwatch. To this end, the platform is now rolling out the Twitter Community Notes fact check function worldwide.

After laying off hundreds of employees, this feature will probably be anything but inconvenient for Twitter CEO Elon Musk. Because the platform is rolling after almost two years of testing the fact check function Community Notes out.

What is behind the Twitter Community Notes?

With the Community Notes, Twitter wants to put fact-checking in the hands of its users. The group announced on Saturday that the feature will now be rolled out worldwide.

Elon Musk declared war with his record takeover of the Fake News platform. He describes the new feature as a “game changer” for his social network, how Engadget reported. Community Notes is a crucial element of his vision of Twitter 2.0.

How does the community fact check work?

The new function is based on a crowd source approach, i.e. including the users of the platform in the evaluation of questionable tweets.

There are two levels for this assessment. First, moderators check the content of such a post. They can then add notes to the tweet to provide more context.

In a next step, normal users can now rate whether they consider this context helpful.

The project started as a bird watch

The Community Notes feature is not new to Twitter, it was previously known by a different name. At the beginning of 2021, Twitter started an initial test phase with the feature called Birdwatch.

Around 1,000 users were involved in the pilot project in the USA. You could check content and provide it with further information. So far, however, only users in the USA have been able to view your information.
