Can wireless charging never be faster due to the 50 watt limit?
It is possible that there will soon be restrictions on the capacity with which we can charge our phone wirelessly. China already applies a limit of 50 watts for such chargers in order not to limit the operation of other wireless technologies.
Wireless charging
The battery life of our phones has been a true Achilles’ heel for years. Although there were no major improvements for battery technology, we did see fast charging evolve. This applies to both wired chargers and wireless charging. Although there could be a halt for further developments in wireless chargers, GizChina writes.
In China they want to limit the power with which you can charge a smartphone wirelessly to 50 watts. This is because more powerful technology can result in interference with other wireless signals. Think of 4G, 5G, but also the WiFi network at home. Documents from the Chinese Ministry of Industry and information show that such chargers sold in China can only charge with a maximum of 50 watts.
Consequences for us
Of course, that still means that this limitation applies primarily to China itself, but it could also affect chargers sold outside the country. Chinese smartphone brands are also likely to optimize their phones for 50W wireless chargers. Other regulators worldwide could also follow China’s lead.
So it seems that those who want the best fast charging performance will have to look at wired chargers. Although wireless chargers with a capacity of 50 watts are also incredibly powerful, the OnePlus 9 series, among others, proved that. Wired fast charging also has drawbacks when you push the limits of the technology, as recently became clear. Do you use a wireless charger at home?
