Buyers have been waiting for these improvements

The Volkswagen Group does not want to be satisfied with the status quo of its e-cars. Instead, they will continue to work on improving some of the most important features. VW is about more range and shorter charging times.

VW’s electric car plans: More power and range, less waiting

VW does not want to stand still with its electric cars. That should also apply to all other manufacturers, but with Wolfsburg it is now a little clearer where the journey should go. The MEB platform, on which the ID series stands, as well as e-cars from other group brands and some Ford models, should be technically raised to a new level.

In plain language this means: More range and shorter charging times are required, as can be seen from a presentation by Silke Bagschik as part of the UBS Paris Electric Car Day (via electric). As Sales and Marketing Manager, she is responsible for the ID series at Volkswagen.

Accordingly, the electric cars based on the MEB platform in the future achieve ranges of up to 700 km. VW’s ID series currently has a limit of around 550 km (ID.3 Pro S). VW also wants to increase the acceleration. Due to the electric motor directly on the axle, electric cars are ahead of combustion engines when it comes to sprinting. The 6.3 seconds for the sprint to 100 km/h with the current ID.5 GTX should shrink to 5.5 together.

Skoda, VW, Ford: Fast-charging capability should convince e-car buyers

You also want to improve the charging performance. As a new upper limit, e-cars on the MEB platform – including the models from Skoda – create up to 200 kW. Depending on the version, 135 to 150 kW is currently the limit, assuming a correspondingly powerful fast charging station. VW is thus setting the right accents, because the range in combination with the comparatively long charging time is still a thorn in the side of many potential buyers of e-cars.

With the ID.5 (GTX), VW has presented the most powerful of its electric models to date:

How VW intends to achieve the goals is still left open. The silver bullet for more range, for example, is not simply to install larger batteries, but the to improve efficiency. Mercedes has just demonstrated how this works with its Vision EQXX study.
