Better than e-cars? Car manufacturer wants to ensure extreme range
The question of the successor to petrol and diesel has long been resolved, the electric car is ready to go. But there is not just one electric car. As one of the leading manufacturers, Hyundai is increasingly relying on hydrogen cells. They should soon create an enormous range.
Alongside Toyota, Hyundai is one of the few car manufacturers who continue to rely on hydrogen technology. Today the group from South Korea presented its plans in more detail. In addition to the previously announced Vision FK sports car, Hyundai intends to focus on industrial vehicles in the future. The company is also giving notice almost by the way a revolution in the car sector at.
Hyundai revolutionizes passenger cars: is the 500,000 km guarantee coming?
With the Hyundai Nexo, the manufacturer has a hydrogen car on the market. The hydrogen cell used there is currently being revised. The goal: a guaranteed mileage of 500,000 km for cars. Many e-car manufacturers currently give a guarantee of 160,000 km for 80 percent of the battery power. This does not mean that the battery will give up after 161,000 km, but there is no comparable performance guarantee.
With the declared goal of 500,000 km, Hyundai is taking a step back in time to the practically indestructible models long before modern cars. Back to the days before new, technically sophisticated components shortened the life of cars.
In addition, the hydrogen cell is being revised: the current version with 100 kW output is physically reduced by 70 percent and so also interesting for smaller models. There is also a more powerful cell with 200 kW.
Hydrogen cell or electric battery? For the price soon no matter
In the long term, they also want the Fuel Cell E-Cars (FC) at prices comparable to battery electric ones produce to be competitive. Because hydrogen-based e-drives have definitely one advantage so far: a tank of hydrogen is refilled faster than a battery in a battery-electric e-car.

Goods traffic should also benefit from this and from a high range. Hyundai is planning, among other things, what it claims to be the first series-produced FC truck – which will not be produced for Germany – as well as autonomous drone vehicles for container transport and emergency rescue. For all of this, the aim is to improve the hydrogen infrastructure properly, including through mobile hydrogen loading tanks.
