Paid podcasts only available in June
Apple’s new paid podcast service has been delayed to June. The iPhone maker promised to roll out the feature with the arrival of iOS 14.6, but this did not happen. Creators could already sign up for the paid podcast service, but still can’t use it.
Apple has already informed podcast makers about the postponement. In the message, Apple states that it wants to “provide the best user experience for creators and listeners.” Apparently that is not yet possible. Apple promises to keep podcast makers informed about availability in the coming weeks.
More about Apple’s paid podcast service
Apple’s new podcast service gives subscribers access to exclusive content for a fixed monthly fee. The podcast service will have a permanent place in the Podcasts app, which is installed by default on all Apple devices. After logging in with your Apple ID you can take out a subscription, after which you get access to the full range.
Apple is giving makers a chance to earn more money through the new service. However, paid podcasts only work for people who listen through Apple’s Podcasts app. The exclusive content cannot therefore be offered via other apps such as Spotify.
The new podcast service comes as no surprise. Apple has been building paid services for years, such as Apple TV Plus, Apple Arcade, and Apple Music. It is not known at the time of writing on which day paid podcasts will become available.
