Apple brags with money donated by employees

Apple earned about $110 billion in 2020 but is letting employees pay for donating to charities. It could be more sympathetic!

As the second largest company in the world, Apple obviously has tons of money. It’s only fair that the multi-billion dollar company returns at least some of its unprecedented profits to the less fortunate. The company has been doing this for a decade, but certainly not just like that; employees have to do the hard work first!

Apple encourages donation

Apple encourages charitable donations through the Employee donation and volunteering program. In the past ten years, that was good for 725 million dollars for charities, converted about 640 million euros.

Now it is definitely a good thing that such a company donates. The way, on the other hand, is a bit mushy. Sure, go for it, but maybe we should expect a little more.

Apple pays $10 to a charity for every hour an employee volunteers. So the employees work for free and Apple pays for it. Alternatively, Apple donates one dollar for every dollar an employee donates.

In short, the entire effort comes from the employees. The same employees who indirectly ensured that Apple made more than $100 billion in profits in 2020. Over $100 billion in one year, of which 0.7% was donated over a 10-year period. That feels a bit scanty, doesn’t it?

Again, that Apple is taking such an initiative is already great. Every dollar that goes to charity is basically a dollar well spent. But in the end, it’s the employees who pay for it, first in man-hours for the company, then in man-hours and dollars as a volunteer. So Apple, donating is great, but a little extra wouldn’t hurt!
