‘After lunch he already had no dry pants left’

Why did I want this so badly, you think when you try to keep a tangle of children alive as a help parent. And then you only wish for one thing: for this long-awaited school trip to come to an end.

Vera (27), mother of Max (5):

“It was my first school trip, even my first school activity ever. Max had just been in group 1 for a month and as part of animal day they went to Diergaarde Blijdorp. Max thought it was so exciting, he only dared if mom came along as a supervisor. That was allowed.

I took care of four other toddlers. It mainly involved preventing accidents, making sure they didn’t run away and making sure they brought their backpacks with lunch. I thought it was a huge responsibility and was completely floored that evening. Actually mainly due to classmate Liam’s bladder.

“We had barely got off the bus when Liam had peed his pants”

We had barely got off the bus when Liam had peed his pants. Don’t worry: his mother had put no fewer than three nappies in his backpack as a precaution. Still, that wasn’t enough to get through the day. No matter how many times I yelled anxiously, “Liam, do you have to pee?” and had him make a mandatory stopover at every toilet building, after lunch he already had no dry pants left.”

Fragrant souvenir

Emma (33), mother of Bo (10), teacher of groups 1 and 2:

“We left with all the toddlers in the bus to Sprookjeswonderland in Enkhuizen. Bring some sweets, fries at noon, an ice cream and end up at Violinde Castle for a fairytale musical. A little girl crawled on my lap during the performance. She wasn’t well, she said, probably from the excitement of the trip and all the sewing.

“For her to spit the go-ahead”

In a reflex I cupped my hands. For her to start spitting and in no time my hands were overflowing with crushed fries with lemonade and everything fell on my pants, shoes and jacket. The children were all obliged to bring extra sets of clothes, but a change in size 40 was unfortunately missing in my bag. I tried to wipe everything clean with napkins and wipes, but there was no way I could brush the stench away.”
