‘Vivo is working on a smartphone with multiple pop-up cameras’

Smartphone manufacturer Vivo is investigating the possibility of incorporating a telephoto camera into a pop-up module. The company has already filed a patent for this.

Extendable camera with four camera lenses

The patent describes an extendable camera that contains four lenses. These cameras can jointly realize ‘super telephoto zoom’. LetsGoDigital discovered that. The accompanying documentation mentions ‘high multiple zoom’. With this technique, the zoom range of current smartphones should be improved. Vivo’s X30 Pro has a 13MP camera with 5x zoom and also a telephoto lens that offers ‘2x zoom’. This concept should therefore significantly improve the X30 Pro’s cameras in zoom range. How far these cameras can zoom in is not stated. It would be considerably more with the current periscope cameras in smartphones.

The cameras in the pop-up module can be extended in four steps, with the bottom lens always available. The user can indicate which additional lenses should be extended and this will depend on the location of the object that needs to be zoomed in.

renders

Concept designer Technizio Concept is already looking ahead and made the renders below based on the patent. The patent describes a pop-up camera module that faces rearward, rather than forward. The cameras are therefore not visible when it is activated. It is not known where the selfie camera and the flash have gone. The first could be incorporated into the screen and the flash around the bottom camera lens.

The pop-up camera module with zoom options seems quite fragile and also very expensive to develop. It is therefore not known whether and how Vivo will process this technology in a smartphone without it breaking quickly and costing too much. Vivo is also working on a phone with a camera drone for aerial selfies. In addition, the manufacturer brought the Vivo X60 and Vivo X60 Pro to the European mainland.
