A driving license in a mobile phone is a reality. It was approved by the first European country

The possibility of carrying important documents in electronic form directly on a smartphone has been talked about for several years, and now it is becoming a reality in the first European country. Users of Apple devices living in Germany can now store their driver’s license in the “ID Wallet” application. The 9to5Mac portal informed about the news.

Unfortunately, the Apple Wallet will not serve this purpose

The function is available from version 1.6. Although Apple introduced in iOS 15 the option to add an ID card to the Apple Wallet application, in Germany it is still necessary to use the government application “ID Wallet”. At present, however, it is still necessary to carry a physical card, the law for the recognition of only the digital version in all situations will come later.

Availability for Android is not currently being discussed.

The application can also be used at check-in at hotels

To add a driver’s license to a mobile phone, users will need a valid electronic ID card, with which the application will issue and store a digital driver’s license. In the future, the application will be useful, for example, in verifying the validity of a car rental license. Currently, the possibility to use the application at check-in in hotels is also being tested.
