Snap (Snapchat) unveils Pixy, a mini-drone with a camera

Snap, the company behind Snapchat, today announced Pixy, its first mini-drone. It carries a camera to take pictures and film. And as you might expect, there is integration with Snapchat.

Introducing Snap’s Pixy Drone

The Pixy mini-drone has a sensor capable of taking 12-megapixel photos and filming in 2.7K at 30 frames per second. Also, it weighs only 101 grams.

The device is designed to fly without the need for a controller, and instead to follow four specific flight paths. The drone can follow you as a subject for 60 seconds at a distance of 2-3 meters. The Orbit trajectory allows the drone to take off from your hand and circle around you. The Hover function allows the drone to stay in place for 60 seconds and follow your movements from one place. Finally, the Reveal function allows the drone to return to you at a given distance. You can also create custom flight paths in the Snapchat app, as well as force the drone to land manually.

Once the photo or video has been captured, you can transfer it to your smartphone (wired or wireless) to find it in the Snapchat application. The mini-drone has a storage capacity of 16 GB and can store up to 1,000 photos or 100 videos according to Snap. Also, it is worth noting that it is possible to export content to your smartphone for use other than Snapchat.

As for battery life, Snap says the lithium-ion battery can last between 5 and 8 flights. Recharging from 0 to 80% is done in 20 minutes. It is possible to charge via the USB-C port of the device.
